What is Wave Browser and how to remove it - TFB (2022)

There are many great browsers to choose from, but you may find that you have an extra browser on your computer that you definitely didn’t choose yourself. If you suddenly have something called “Wave Browser” installed on your computer, there are important things you need to know about its risks and how to get rid of them using a little troubleshooting.

What is a Wave Browser?

The name may indicate that Wave Browser is a web browser. According to public threat intelligence , the Wave browser is based on the open source Chromium browser, which also serves as the basis for Google Chrome and the latest version of Microsoft Edge.

The Wave Browser home page advertises the software as a privacy-focused browser and as a browser that can be used for marketing purposes.

This all sounds innocent enough, but while you can voluntarily install the Wave Browser, the real problem is that software gets onto computers without users asking for it or knowingly giving permission. This makes Wave Browser a PUP or Potentially Unwanted Program . PUPs walk a fine line between harmless annoyance and outright malware.

There’s a good chance your antivirus software won’t raise an alarm when something like Wave Browser is installed on your system, or won’t do anything to prevent that installation in the first place.

What does the Wave Browser do?

According to the threat assessment, Wave Browser was created by Wavesor Software, owned by Cypriot company Polarity Technologies Ltd. Polarity, in turn, is owned by Genimous, a Hong Kong company. Genimous is allegedly associated with several “browser hijackers”. Wave Browser is also affiliated with iSign International, which makes several other security products.

The main red flag of the Wave Browser is how little information there is about what it does, how it works, or why it exists. Websites promoting the software say nothing but a few vague privacy statements, without explaining exactly how it’s supposed to work.

Is it a browser hijacker or harmless adware?

Browser hijackers are a type of malware that change the settings and appearance of your browser. For example, they may change your home page to a malicious web page (displayed in a new tab) or install add-ons and plugins that do things like record you through your webcam, record your keystrokes, or otherwise invade your privacy. to trick or victimize you. Suspicious (and ugly) toolbars in your browser are another classic symptom of browser hijackers.

The Wave Browser doesn’t seem to be up to the level of malicious browser hijacking. Instead, it is a form of “adware”. However, even adware comes with risks that the developers didn’t plan for, which we’ll cover in more detail later in this article.

Suspicious Wave Browser Behavior

The Threat Assessment Summary indicates a number of issues with Wave Browser behavior.

First, the program was designed to evade analysis, resist removal, and, as mentioned earlier, install itself without the user’s knowledge. It can mask desktop windows to hide graphical interactions. It also mentions “some Nymaim behavior”, which refers to a (completely separate) trojan that installs additional malware while it’s on your system.

How did Wave Browser get on your computer?

Unless you intentionally installed Wave Browser on your computer, the most likely way for it to enter your system is through a practice sometimes referred to as “binding”.

This is when additional software is associated with the main package you want to install.

For example, you can download a great DVD burning application, but it also installs things like browser plugins or antivirus packages. These additional software packages are often just adware and not malware. It can even be completely innocent applications that you might otherwise need on your computer.

Regardless of the payload, app bundling doesn’t give you permission to install the main app to install everything else.

The association is not illegal or fraudulent. This is based on our tendency to ignore everything written in app installers by simply clicking “Next” a few times until we can use the desired app. By making related applications “opt out” rather than “approved”, they manage to shift the responsibility to the user. If you had read the installation terms and unchecked or set up a “standard” installation, in the first place the related applications would never be installed on your computer.

How dangerous is Wave Browser?

We must be clear that there is no objective evidence that the Wave browser does anything specifically malicious. However, the whole way it works, avoiding analysis and resisting being removed from your system, makes it an application you probably don’t need. Add to that the shady nature of the companies associated with him, and there’s even more reason to stay away.

Wave Browser also changes the settings of all browsers on your system. This is done without your consent, without explaining what the changes are, and certainly not in the interests of the user.

The scale of the harm here should not be underestimated. You may encounter promotional pop-ups that you might not otherwise have. These ads can be malicious, slow down your computer, or violate your privacy. You may also be redirected to fake or other malicious websites, which greatly increases the risk of going online.

How to uninstall Wave Browser automatically

As you will see in the next two sections of the article, Wave Browser is not that easy to uninstall. This requires a serious study of your computer’s files and settings and risks such as losing data or breaking something else.

That is why our first recommendation is to install and run specialized adware or malware to identify and remove Wave Browser. There are several anti-malware apps out there, but Wave Browser is protected by MalwareBytes . Just install the program, run a scan, and then select quarantine and uninstall Wave Browser.

The best part of this method is that the software also has to identify other programs that Wave Browser may have subsequently installed, so this is generally the most efficient solution.

If you are using a Mac, you may want to consider using CleanMyMac X, which is a malware removal tool, as part of its functionality.

Restore your computer before installing Wave Browser

If you have a system restore point or a recent disk backup, it may be faster and more thorough to restore your computer to a time before Wave Browser was installed.

It’s not as quick or easy as using a malware removal tool, but will likely be less time consuming and more efficient than trying to manually remove it if you can’t or don’t want to use a malware removal tool.

If you can’t use the malware removal tool and don’t have a recovery method available, you’ll have to clean it up manually.

How to manually uninstall Wave Browser in Windows

The first step to uninstalling Wave Browser on Microsoft Windows systems is to uninstall the software in the usual way.

  1. On Windows 10 or Windows 11, open the Start menu and search for Add or Remove Programs. You can also find it by searching for Apps & Features or Programs & Features .

  1. Find the Wave Browser entry and delete it.

If you don’t see anything labeled “Wave Browser”, order your installed programs by date, with the most recent apps at the top. Uninstall any software that you don’t know or don’t know what it does. If you’re not sure, do an internet search to see what each one does and make sure it’s legal. Using the uninstall feature in Windows will remove the “exe” file that launches the Wave Browser.

Once uninstalled, restart your computer in safe mode to stop everything but core Windows components from loading. Most importantly, because Wave Browser adds the task to the Task Scheduler, Safe Mode prevents it from running at startup, allowing you to manually remove its components.

If you don’t know how to start Windows in Safe Mode, check out our guides on how to start Windows 10 and Windows 11 in Safe Mode.

In safe mode, delete these files and folders from your computer’s hard drive:

  • %QUICKLAUNCH%\WaveBrowser.lnk
  • %PROGRAMS%\WaveBrowser.lnk
  • %APPDATA%\Waves or software
  • %USERROOT%\Waves or software
  • %PROGRAMFILES%\Wavesor Software

Keep in mind that these locations refer to where you choose to install Windows and your applications on your computer. These locations also change between versions of the Wave Browser.

In our test inside the virtual machine, we found the Wavesor folder in Users/IEUser/Wavesor Software/Wave Browser .

If you find it difficult to find Wave Browser, you can check the properties of its desktop shortcut and find its target location.

Then open the Start menu, search for ” Registry Editor ” and open it.

A WARNING. You can crash your Windows computer by making a mistake while editing in the Registry Editor. If you don’t feel confident, leave it alone or ask someone who knows what they’re doing for help.

In the registry editor, find the following keys and delete them:

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\WaveBrowser
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Wavesor
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\WaveBrowser

After deleting these files and registry entries, restart your computer as usual and Wave Browser will be gone.

How to manually uninstall Wave Browser on Mac

Fortunately, uninstalling Wave Browser from a Mac is much easier than from a Windows PC. All you have to do is go to the Applications folder in Finder and then drag Wave Browser to the Trash . Empty the trash to delete it permanently.

While Wave Browser may be gone, its web browser plugins may remain in your browsers. If you only use Safari, see How to install or remove Safari extensions on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. If you’re using Chrome, see How to Install and Uninstall Chrome Extensions.

Find related apps and processes

Once you have uninstalled the Wave Browser from your Windows PC or macOS computer, your work is not yet complete. You still need to check out other things that may have been installed with Wave Browser.

On Windows, open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) and look for any running processes that look suspicious. Do a web search on each one to make sure it’s not a legitimate process, and if it’s malware, do another web search to see how to remove it.

On a Mac, you’ll use Activity Monitor (find it with Spotlight search via Command+Spacebar) to do the same.

Again, it’s much easier to just use anti-malware software to identify and remove potential adware or spyware. Use the manual method only if these programs do not solve the problem.

Don’t forget to reset your browser settings

Even after you have removed all traces of Wave Browser and all other suspicious programs that might have been installed along with it, there are still a few problems.

Any changes to your settings or additional plugins that have been installed should be processed. Just because Wave Browser is gone doesn’t mean the changes it already made to your system have also been undone.

Whether you’re using Microsoft Edge, Safari, Mozilla Firefox, or Google Chrome, you’ll need to check and reset each browser individually. If there are browsers you don’t use, you might be better off deleting them.

If you are still using an older version of Windows with Internet Explorer, we highly recommend that you upgrade to a newer version of Windows and another browser such as Edge as your security is not sufficient on these older platforms.

While we can’t detail the steps to restart each browser, most Chromium-based browsers like Chrome and the latest version of Microsoft Edge use the same general method.

Just go to “Settings” > “Advanced” > “Reset settings” > “Restore default settings” .

You should also visit Settings > Extensions and remove any extensions you didn’t put there.

How about Wave Browser on iOS and Android?

There appears to be a version of the Wave Browser in both the Apple Store and the Google Play Store. We have not been able to find any information indicating that these applications are malicious. Both Google and Apple have strict rules for apps on their platforms, so we would expect those apps to be listed and delisted if they behaved inappropriately.

What is Wave Browser and how to remove it - TFB (14)

That being said, it’s probably best not to install them at all. There are many great mobile browsers out there, and if you’re really concerned about strict privacy, consider something like Brave Browser instead.

How to prevent PNP in the future

The best way to prevent the installation of PUPs is to carefully read each page of the installation wizard when installing a new application. Especially if it’s a free app, remember that free apps still have to pay for their own development and hosting. If that money doesn’t come from you, then it must come from someone else. This means in-app advertising and external sponsorship from companies to link their software to the app.

This creates an incentive even for reputable free app developers to open the door to malicious or unwanted software that infiltrates your network for technical reasons.

As always, you should never install software that you download from the Internet without checking it for malware. Before running it, you can use an online tool like VirusTotal to check the installer. Just remember that even if the scanner doesn’t show malware, there might still be embedded adware in the package, so be especially careful when installing the software.
